Selecting ISO 9001 Internal Auditors
The ISO9001 standard does not have any requirements for internal auditors be certified. Third-party auditors require certification in order to audit for a registrar, but no such requirements exist for internal auditors.
ISO 10011 gives guidance on auditor selection but most businesses are unaware that they have a reference for the selection on internal auditors. In most cases the internal auditing function is given to a volunteer who show the most interest in quality as a profession.
Even though there is no requirement for certification, certification is possible through training programs. The Registrar Accreditation Board (RAB) offers a certification program for Quality Management Systems (QMS) internal auditors. You can obtain more information about certification by visiting RAB's QMS Internal Auditor page. The American Society for Quality (ASQ) also has internal auditor training programs.
Although there is no requirement to be certified, completing either of the above training programs indicates your level of professionalism and dedication to the profession of internal quality auditing.
